Churches, tax and the Occupy movement

Christian Aid has been calling for reform of the financial system since the financial crisis hit in 2008 and more recently the Occupy Movement has been causing ripples all over the world – putting inequality at the centre of public debate on the purpose and nature of capitalism.

Last week we published a new report calling on the churches to play a role in calling for a more just and equitable financial system that serves society.

Today, the Occupy London movement released a statement which says the following:

`We must abolish tax havens and complex tax avoidance schemes, and ensure corporations pay tax that accurately reflects their real profits.'

Ending Tax Haven Secrecy is a crucial step towards ensuring that poor countries can collect the taxes they are due to pay for schools, hospitals and essential services. And as Occupy make clear, would  benefit of society in the UK too.
