Stop the cuts

Ireland has been a generous and consistent donor to the developing world in recent years and has been vocal in speaking up for those most marginalised around the world.

But since January 2009 the overseas aid budget has shrunk by €195 million - an astonishing 21.8%. These cuts will hit the world’s poorest.

So we urge you to join our campaign to stop any further cuts being made to Irish aid.

You can email Ireland's minister for foreign affairs, Micheál Martin TD.

Or you can send the minister a campaign postcard. These are available in the latest issue of the Christian Aid Ireland magazine or from our Dublin (01 611 0801) and Belfast (028 9038 1204) offices.

Funding drop for Christian Aid

Christian Aid Ireland’s own funding from the Irish government’s development arm, Irish Aid, has been reduced by 20% – a loss of €716,000.

As a result, we have had to reduce funding to local partner organisations in Angola, Afghanistan, Burundi, Colombia, Israel and the Occupied Palestinian Territories, Rwanda and Sierra Leone. These partners are providing vital services to poor communities in these countries and territories.

We recognise that in the current financial situation, budget cuts had to be made, but a 22% cut in Irish aid funding is far too much.

We urge the government to avoid inflicting additional hardship on the poorest people in the world, and resist making any further cuts.
