Nepal fuel crisis halts winter preparations for quake survivors

Since our last update, Nepal continues to struggle through a crippling fuel crisis that threatens the livelihoods of the Nepalese people. This crisis is having extremely detrimental effects on relief efforts in the aftermath of the Nepal Earthquake that claimed the lives of over 9,000 people in April this year.

Nepal Fuel Crisis

On 20 September Nepal adopted a new constitution, which led to a series of protests, as well as a halt in trade along the border with India. Essential supplies, including fuel and vital medicines have become scarce in Nepal, to the detriment of a country only just recovering from one of the strongest earthquakes in over 80 years. Dipankar Patnaik, our Senior Emergency Programme manager says:

'We are facing 10-12 hour power cuts each day, and we have not had cooking gas for the last six weeks, but survivors of the Nepal quake are hardest hit and there are families still in need of durable shelter for the winter - it is these families that are our primary concern.'

Soaring fuel and transport costs have made it increasingly difficult to procure essential winter items for families still recovering from the 7.5 quake that devastated Nepal, just months ago. This will undoubtedly have a direct impact on the most vulnerable communities located in already difficult terrain and who are now at risk of being cut off by winter snow.

In response, Christian Aid Nepal is taking precautionary measures to ensure that we are making the best use of resources. We are prioritising the most difficult to reach areas in the first instance, particularly targeting those communities living in remote and hard to reach places.

Our fuel is being managed through the World Food Programme, and we are continuing to work with key organisation such as the Association of International NGOs in Nepal (AIN).

We will continue to update this page with progress on the situation.
