Our partners' response

Christian Aid partners continue to respond to the ongoing needs of those who have been affected by the devastating earthquake.

Thanks to the generosity of those who have given to our Haiti appeal, we have been able to send £1.58 million so far to support the work of our partners.

Our partners continue to provide urgent supplies to affected families, including tarpaulins for shelter and food parcels. Young people are receiving counselling and therapy in order to start to deal with their trauma and grief.

We will also be providing seeds and tools, livestock, agricultural training and small cash grants to help rebuild the lives of families and communities affected.

Here Christian Aid's Sophie Richmond talks about the overwhelming response from our partners in the Dominican Republic to the earthquake in Haiti.

Partners in Haiti

Aprofisa

Aprosifa has proven track record of responding to disasters caused by the hurricanes of previous years.

Following the earthquake, they used their experience of working in one of the most deprived areas of Port-au-Prince to respond to the needs of the most vulnerable.

Aprosifa is working in the Carrefour Feuilles district of Port-au-Prince. It is also working with food vendors to provide free, hot meals for families in the local area and feeding 4,400 people.

Approximately 450 people have received training in small business management, with more to come. They will use their new knowledge and expertise to start a business and begin to get their lives and the lives of their families back on track.

Over one hundred young people have received art therapy sessions, helping them cope with the trauma and stress of their experiences.

Garr

In the immediate aftermath of the earthquake, Garr distributed hygiene kits, baby kits and food to families in five different neighbourhoods in Delmas 33 and in Port-au-Prince, and distributed tarpaulin shelters to over 1,150 families.

More than 880 families have received food parcels that include rice, fish, cooking oil, pasta and beans.

Around 800 people received cash vouchers which helps them decide what they need most to support their families.

Its staff have been providing around 400 children with hot meals and helping them recover from trauma through play and art.

Gramir

Gramir has been distributing fertilisers and seeds to rural communities in the south of Haiti, just in time for the planting season.

These areas have received tens of thousands of people migrating away from Port-au-Prince, returning to the villages and towns where they grew up. In some cases Christian Aid is the only agency working in these areas.

Haiti Survie

Haiti Survie have been distributing hygiene kits to people living in some of the poorest areas in Port-au-Prince, and promoting good health practices throughout communities to help avoid the spread of infection and disease.

Over 300 families have received dry food rations or cash to help them feed their families, and work is starting on providing transitional shelters for those whose homes were devastated.

Back to school grants have been given to the families of more than 200 children, and cash grants given to families to help them start a small business.

Koral

Koral has been distributing food, shelter and basic non-food items to families near Les Cayes, south west of Haiti. In the coming months it hopes to distribute livestock and help families establish small businesses.

National Human Rights Defence Network (RNDDH)

RNDDH continues its work distributing cash via money transfer offices to families in Petit Goave, west of Port-au-Prince.  More than 2,000 families have been helped this way.

Our partner chose to distribute cash rather than food as Petit Goave has plenty of food available in the markets, but most people do not have enough money to buy it.

This method of distribution allows people the dignity to chose their own solutions to the problems they face.

Poz

Poz continues to work with 400 people living with HIV/AIDS and their families in Port-au-Prince, Petit Goave, Fermathe, Jacmel and Montrouis. It is providing basic food, cash grants, tarpaulins and hygiene kits.

It is also running counselling sessions and offering medical services to these communities.

Partners in the Dominican Republic

SSID

Working at the Haitian and Dominican Republic border town of Jimani, SSID runs an operational hub distributing goods through Haitian partner networks.

They are also working in two emergency camps near the border, providing equipment to help set up community kitchens which feed all members of each camp.

Many of the supplies come from our ACT partner the Church World Service. It has provided basic relief supplies to over 50,000 people.

Help Haiti Coalition

Christian Aid and many of its partners in the Dominican Republic are members of the Help Haiti Coalition.

This is a group of 23 agencies that have come together to channel aid overland to Haiti. It has bases at all four border crossing points between the two countries and seeks to support the most marginalised and vulnerable people in these areas.
