Please help families who have lost everything

A literacy class in Sierra Leone

Torrential rain in Sierra Leone has caused fatal flooding and mudslides, killing at least 500 people, including 120 children.

With 600 people still missing, the number of deaths is expected to rise as rescue efforts continue.

In Sierra Leone’s capital, Freetown, many houses have been swept away, leaving 3,000 people without a safe place to call home.

We are on the ground in Freetown, providing urgent supplies to survivors, but with your help we could do so much more.

Please donate to our Sierra Leone Mudslide Appeal to help us reach as many families affected as possible.

People have been temporarily relocated to schools, churches and mosques within the areas of the disaster.

Listen to Country Manager, Jeanne Kamara, describe the aftermath of the mudslide.

How we're helping

We are working in the most vulnerable areas of Freetown to help over 200 families whose houses were washed away in the early hours of 14 August.

Our immediate priority is to provide food, water, clothing, hygiene kits, mosquito nets, and household essentials like cooking utensils and water containers.

With your support, we will also provide cash to families who have lost their belongings and help women and girls at risk of violence.

More rains are expected in the coming weeks which may worsen conditions. Please give what you can to our Sierra Leone Mudslide Appeal today.

Prayer for Sierra Leone

Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted.

Matthew 5:4

God of all comfort we cry out to you,
for and with those affected by the mudslide and flooding in Sierra Leone
Comfort our brothers and sisters in the diaspora
whose hearts are aching and longing for news from home
Comfort all who have missing loved ones
and for those who have had their worst fears realised
Comfort all who have lost their homes
and everything they own in a matter of moments
Comfort all who are despairing of the future
who moved to Freetown to make a better life for themselves
And because comfort alone is not enough
we pray for resources, wisdom and strength
for local and international aid agencies,
pulling together once again to respond to extreme need
God you once used mud to bring healing to a man's eyes
open our eyes and hearts now to respond as we can to this tragedy.
In the name of Jesus we pray,
