In May 2008, Cyclone Nargis hit Burma’s Irrawaddy delta killing an estimated 140,000 people and severely affecting 2.4 million more.
Thanks to your support, Christian Aid raised £3.4 million in response to the emergency and has been able to help nearly 200,000 people rebuild their lives.
Christian Aid has been able to:
deliver food, water and basic essentials to 68,794 households
give medical and psychosocial counselling to 61,615 people
provide temporary shelter to 26,154 households
distribute equipment and basic items to restore livelihoods to 12,487 fishing and farming households
provide clothing to 10,450 women and children
build and repair 470 homes
regenerate mangrove forests in five villages that will protect the coastline and communities from future storm damage.
The achievements of Christian Aid and other aid agencies would not have been possible without the vital role that Burmese partner organisations played in our response, helping us to reach communities in some of the most remote parts of the delta.
