Prayers for Haiti

Remembering Haiti

Merciful God,
Today we remember the people of Haiti.
We remember its terrible history of oppression, slavery and resistance,
and the injustices done to it in times past,
and we repent of our indifference to its suffering.
God, in your mercy,
Hear our prayer

We remember all that has contributed to making Haiti
the poorest country in the western hemisphere:
its exploitation by rich countries and corporations,
its corrupt or weak governance,
its environmental degradation and deforestation,
and we repent of our complicity, knowing and unknowing.
God, in your mercy,
Hear our prayer

We remember the desperate tragedy of the 2010 earthquake,
The devastation it caused,
The unimaginable loss of homes, loved ones and livelihoods,
The unbearable grief of the motherless child, the distraught mother,
the bereft widow, the weeping father.
We pray for all those who still carry the pain of such loss.
God, in your mercy,
Hear our prayer

We remember the aftermath of the earthquake;
the panic, the confusion, the media mayhem,
a fragile government struggling to reconstruct in the face of overwhelming odds.
We remember the help that didn’t help,
the pledged money that never arrived,
the lack of understanding of the complexities of rebuilding.
We remember the cholera epidemic,
and we pray for healing and justice in Haiti.
God, in your mercy
Hear our prayer

We remember all Haitians affected by Hurricane Sandy;
those who died, and their families,
the rotting crops, the threatened infrastructure,
all who despair at yet another setback.
We pray for deliverance for the people of Haiti
from insecurity and exposure, from sickness and malnutrition
from fear of what tomorrow may bring, and what it may not bring.
God, in your mercy,
Hear our prayer

We ask our prayers in the name of Jesus
in whom all life and grace is found.
May we see with his eyes, act with his will,
and love with his love.

Giving thanks

Gracious God,
We give great thanks for all those
whose light has shone out of darkness in Haiti;
for the courage and resilience of the people,
for the tireless work of Christian Aid partners,
for the faithful commitment of Christian Aid staff
for the generosity of all who have donated, advocated and prayed.

We give thanks for security against violence for women and girls
and for advocacy and training in citizen and human rights;
for 400 new homes in 2012 built by Christian Aid partners,
for new agricultural livelihoods in rural Haiti
and for protection against human rights abuses
in camps on the border with the Dominican Republic.

Strengthen everyone working to bring relief and reconstruction,
and sustain in all of us a living hope,
not in our own strength but in your power to love
and to bring change and hope to hopeless places.

A Prayer for Haiti

Be merciful to me, O God, be merciful to me,
for in you my soul takes refuge:
in the shadow of your wings I will take refuge,
until the destroying storms pass by.  (Psalm 57:1)

O God, our refuge and strength,
our help in times of trouble
Have mercy on the lands where the earth has given way.
Have mercy on the lands where the weather has destroyed livelihoods.
Prosper those who rebuild houses,
and strengthen those who rebuild hope
so that all the communities of Haiti
may face the future without fear.
