We advise walkers to bring walking shoes, walking clothes (no jeans), a raincoat, drink and a sandwich. Bring a change of clothes in case it rains and you get wet.
Please note that no dogs are allowed on the Sheep’s Head Way.
Rural Transport coaches will operate on the day to ferry walkers to the starting points and venues.
After completing the hike, all walkers will return to Kilcrohane Community Hall where tea, coffee, soft drinks, soups and sandwiches will be provided by local sponsor The Gourmet Grill.
This is a major fundraising event for the work of Christian Aid and this year we are inspired by the work of the Christian Aid partner HUNDEE in Ethiopia, which was the focus of Christian Aid Week 2015.
We are focussing on the story of Loko, who walks walks alone for eight hours a day in shoes so thin that thorns repeatedly pierce through to her feet, to gather and sell firewood so she can feed her children.
Loko refuses to give up hope. She dreams of owning a cow one day; its milk would help her children to grow strong, and she could also sell some so she could save enough money to set up a small business buying and selling tea and coffee.
We are requesting that at least 14 walkers on the Poet's Way route would each carry a bundle of timber (1km each in a relay) like the firewood that Loko carries. Each person doing so will be asked to raise a target of €206 in sponsorship - the equivalent of the cost of a cow in Ethiopia.
Our fundraising target for this year’s Sheep’s Head Hike is €8,240 - the equivalent cost of 40 cows in Ethiopia.
