We’re looking for at least 40 churches in the UK to help us to launch a new malaria control project in Sierra Leone. By pledging to raise £500 over twelve months, each church will fund the work of one Malaria Control Agent for a year, helping to save lives in a continent where, according to the World Health Organization, a child dies from malaria every 45 seconds.

Less than a third of children in Sierra Leone sleep under a mosquito net
The Malaria Control Agents are local volunteers. After receiving training and equipment, they will provide communities with advice about how to use mosquito nets, spot symptoms of malaria and access treatment.
This is vital work. At present less than one in three children in Sierra Leone sleep under a mosquito net. And malaria accounts for almost a third of deaths in children under five.
One person who has already volunteered is 24-year-old Fatmata from Kenema District in the Eastern Province of Sierra Leone. Fatmata has seen two of her children die from malaria – including her eight-month-old daughter.
She says, ‘I know now that my children would have lived if I had taken them earlier to the hospital.’ That’s why Fatmata is determined to give accurate health information to other mothers in her community, so that they don’t make the same mistake and suffer as she has.
