Mrs Marjorie Viner, a longstanding Christian Aid supporter and chairperson of Christian Aid's committee in Coventry, died earlier this month aged 88 after a courageous battle with cancer.
Marjorie began supporting Christian Aid at the very beginning of its existence in the 1950s, and has been a dedicated fundraiser ever since, raising over £40,000 a year through the house-to-house collections during Christian Aid Week.
After her appointment as Chairperson to the Christian Aid committee in Coventry six years ago, she sought to inspire and enthuse people to do more. New initiatives instigated by her with the support of the committee included a yearly art competition in the local schools, a market stall sale, and a prayer-support network among the churches in Coventry.
Marjorie was passionate about helping others to understand more about poverty worldwide, and determined to make a difference. One member of her committee recently said: "Mrs Viner really is wonderful - she makes us do it and not give up!"
Her commitment to fighting poverty and injustice has been an inspiration to many, particularly in Coventry Cathedral where she had been a member since childhood.
Marjorie was a dedicated and committed supporter of Christian Aid to the very end. Despite being very ill with cancer in the last few months, she was still concerned about the future of Christian Aid in Coventry, and how she could ensure that things were continued.
Last year, an award was bestowed upon her that recognised her lifetime of commitment to the organisation, a moment which Marjorie has fondly remembered in recent times.
As Marjorie leaves us in person, so remains her legacy of love, compassion, and dedication to the world's poorest. We remember her as a determined fundraiser; staunch and unwavering supporter; and someone who has made a difference in the lives of many. She will be much missed by all.
