Having graduated in English Literature and Religious Studies, with a keen interest in international development, Rachael decided her next step in life would be to rise to the challenge of our gap year scheme in Belfast.
‘I was considering a gap year overseas after finishing university but was struggling to finance it.
'I heard about the Christian Aid gap year scheme and it seemed like the perfect opportunity to spend a year making a difference without having to pay to travel to the far side of the world to do it!’
The role
‘I go to youth and student groups to speak about the work of Christian Aid and try to get them involved in taking action. The main part of my job is campaigning; I also visit schools to get them involved.
'On top of this I do some fundraising, promotion, and help with general administration in the office when needed.
‘The gap year team went on a trip to DR Congo which was absolutely incredible, especially for those who, like me, had never visited a developing country before. When I got back, I spoke about the trip to several youth and prayer groups.
‘Since being at Christian Aid, I have also organised a Masquerade ball, a prayer week and helped run a school Eco-Day. Plus there are the day-to-day tasks like helping with opening the post or setting up speaking engagements.’
The best bit
‘Visiting DR Congo! The week we spent in and around Kinshasa (the capital city) was incredible.
‘Aside from that, I think our initial briefing week in London will always stand out as the first time the whole gap year team met - and realised we were all as crazy as each other!
‘I get to spend a year working with children and young people, which I love. I get to speak out and campaign on issues that I’m really passionate about.
'I get to be part of a team who care about the same things I do. And all without having to get myself too much further into debt!
