The hurricanes and resulting floods that swept through Guatemala earlier in the year have devastated coastal water supplies. Christian Aid partners are striving to provide clean water for affected communities.
In May 2010, communities along the Pacific coast of Guatemala were rocked by tropical storm Agatha, and again by Alex just a few weeks later. These massive storms caused flooding and mud slides, as well as damage to crops and infrastructure.
Even though many families found themselves up to their waists in water, they couldn’t get anything to drink, as thousands of wells were contaminated with sea water and sewage, and many water systems were destroyed. A child from the stricken district of Taxisco described the impact:
'It was awful. We had nothing to drink as the water from the tap was really dirty and my parents had no money to buy water.'
Christian Aid partner the Local Power and Development Collective (CPDL) has been distributing drinking water and purification tablets to people in Taxisco and other affected areas. CPDL is also providing training and equipment to help local communities set up emergency rescue teams.
Such storms are a regular occurrence in the region.
CPDL has been helping vulnerable communities to develop early warning systems, strengthen flood protection and put pressure on the authorities to improve water supplies and other key aspects of the local infrastructure.
All this work means that every time a storm hits, local people will be able to bounce back quicker.
