Get fit for a challenging New Year

It’s that time of year again… you eat too much, vow to lose weight in the New Year but end up being put off by hefty gym membership fees.  In 2009 Christian Aid is challenging you to get fit for free and do something for charity - two great resolutions in one!

As the credit crunch bites turn your back on the gym and get fit in the great outdoors.  Running and cycling burn on average 500 calories an hour - that’s about 2 mince pies - so dust off those trainers, get the bike out of the shed and sign up to a sponsored running, walking or cycling challenge and raise money for poor communities around the world.

Here are a few to choose from...

London to Paris Bike Ride 22-26 July 2009

With Britain’s success in the cycling at the Beijing Olympics why not be inspired to train for this 300 mile road challenge?  Taking place over 5 days, 150 cyclists will leave London and arrive in Paris in time to see the finale of the Tour de France.

British Olympic double gold medallist cycling hero, Bradley Wiggins, says, ‘This is an exciting event bringing cyclists of all abilities together on what is a really picturesque route – and of course they get to see the Tour de France at the end of the challenge! I encourage you to join the Christian Aid London to Paris Bike Ride Team in 2009 for what will be a truly awesome experience.’

Great North Run 20 September 2009

The world’s biggest half marathon has over 50,000 participants.  From Newcastle city centre to the South Shields coast, enjoy the Geordie hospitality as you are cheered along this 13- mile course.

Great Manchester Run 17 May 2009

If 13 miles is a bit too challenging then how about a 10K run?  The Great Manchester Run is one of the fastest growing races in the UK and a great distance for an introduction to running.

Hadrian’s Wall trek 3-5 July 09

Perhaps walking is more your thing?  Follow in the steps of the Romans (sandals optional) as you walk 25 miles alongside the only remaining section of the wall at this UNESCO world heritage site.

Whatever you choose to do in 2009 the money you raise will help Christian Aid support some of the world’s poorest communities in around 50 countries, regardless of race of religion.  So you will feel better in more ways than one!
