Christian Aid week service at Glasgow Cathedral

Dr Daleep Mukarji OBE, Director of Christian Aid UK, to preach at 6.30pm service.

Glasgow Cathedral will hold a Christian Aid Week service at 6.30pm on Sunday 17 May 2009. Dr Daleep Mukarji, Director of Christian Aid, will preach and the service will include stories from the developing world and prayers for justice for the world’s poor.

Dr Mukarji said: ‘We value the prayers, actions and support of many in the Church of Scotland.  We are their agency and over the years have really made a difference for people in developing countries. Christian Aid Week gives an opportunity to witness the Gospel that must be good news for the poor.’

Dr Laurence Whitley, minister of Glasgow Cathedral said: ‘No organisation is more respected than Christian Aid. We in Scotland have a proud record of our support for its work and so are especially delighted to have the opportunity to hear and meet with Dr Mukarji.  The Director’s visit will enable us all to learn how our fund-raising efforts do have an impact for good, and yet how much there is still to be done in the world.  I do hope the event will be well supported.’

Christian Aid Week is the UK’s longest running door to door fundraising week. Three hundred thousand volunteers are preparing to deliver over three million red envelopes across the UK from 10 -16 May 2009. Last year over £2 million was raised in Scotland.

The money goes directly to Christian Aid’s partner organisations, who work with people of all faith and none to help themselves out of poverty, and to speak out against injustice.
Glasgow Cathedral has long been a supporter of Christian Aid.

Members of the Cathedral Choir, accompanied by John Turner, Director of Music, will hold a fundraising concert for the charity on Thursday 21 May at 7.30pm.
