December 16

Isaiah 60, 1-3 & 18-21

Something to read

Arise, shine; for your light has come,
and the glory of the Lord has risen upon you.
For darkness shall cover the earth,
and thick darkness the peoples;
but the Lord will arise upon you,
and his glory will appear over you.
Nations shall come to your light,
and kings to the brightness of your dawn.

Violence shall no more be heard in your land,
devastation or destruction within your borders;
you shall call your walls Salvation,
and your gates Praise.
The sun shall no longer be
your light by day,
nor for brightness shall the moon
give light to you by night;
but the Lord will be your everlasting light,
and your God will be your glory.
Your sun shall no more go down,
or your moon withdraw itself;
for the Lord will be your everlasting light,
and your days of mourning shall be ended.
Your people shall all be righteous;
they shall possess the land for ever.
They are the shoot that I planted, the work of my hands,
so that I might be glorified.

Something to think about

Imagine a day without night (or darkness) at its ending, or the brightness to outweigh the night so strong that there can be no notice of the night or its darkness.

This is the metaphor of the glory of the Lord. And this can be you; it is what the text is saying: 'Arise, shine, for your light has come, and the glory of the Lord rises upon you'.

Then you will become all light for the people in the darkness in the world, people of your generation and beyond. You will lighten their ways and brighten their life for you have chosen to be friend with the Lord. The Lord is the one who will empower you with this light to shine into life in any situation.

Imagine your views, opinions and decisions will then be clear and right, for you are inspired by the Lord your friend.

Jesus said: 'You are my friends if you do what I command. I no longer call you servants, because servants do not know their master’s business. Instead, I have called you friends, for everything that I learned from my Father, I have made known to you' (John 15:14-15).

Irenee of Lyon said that the glory of the Lord is human beings on earth. And that is you!

Something to do

Choose to help somebody after consulting the Lord your friend about it. The choice of help is totally yours, according to what you know and can do, bearing in mind that you are bringing light or joy into the life of the person. Well done!

Something to pray

Thank you Lord for your word
And the offer of your friendship and light
Help us faithful Lord to trust your Love and
The Power of your Light.
And give us to be the reflection of your Light
Among all people. Amen!
