Acts 1, 15-17

Something to read

In those days Peter stood up among the believers (a group numbering about a hundred and twenty) and said, 'Brothers and sisters, the Scripture had to be fulfilled in which the Holy Spirit spoke long ago through David concerning Judas, who served as guide for those who arrested Jesus. He was one of our number and shared in our ministry.'
New International Version

Something to think about

Peter may not have been a man of learning, but he knew that there are things the prophets warn you about. One of them is that if people champion the cause of all that is good and right and true, it will test out where their ultimate loyalties lie. Some of your closest allies will make different choices from you – and they will betray you over it.

In any shared enterprise, we have a mix of motivations for getting involved. All those motivations can seem to point in the same direction – until something happens and we have to choose between them. Judas joined the Jesus movement with assumptions about what it would eventually achieve. He was wrong, and it broke his heart.

We would do well to heed the prophets’ warnings today, when we get involved in the cause of the poor. Are we clear about what we are seeking to achieve, and how? And are these same things equally clear to those we work closely with?

Something to do

Make a list of the charities you support. Are you clear about what they do and how they do it? Do you agree with their priorities? Take responsibility for the fact that you support these charities, and adjust your commitments accordingly, so that your commitment is not betrayed.

Something to pray

Holy Father, give me the gift of discernment. Make me wise about the motivations of those I work most closely with in the cause of the Kingdom. And purify my own heart, so that I act from the best of motivation, and don’t end up with the kind of heartbreaking choice that Judas faced.
