John 11, 21-24

Something to read

Martha said to Jesus, `Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died. But even now I know that God will give you whatever you ask of him.' Jesus said to her, `Your brother will rise again.' Martha said to him, `I know that he will rise again in the resurrection on the last day.'

Something to think about

How often have you heard someone described as ‘an old Martha’?

We have already met Martha who was concerned about the catering, but today we catch a glimpse of a woman of faith. From her welcoming words to Jesus she clearly believes that if He had been there earlier, her brother would not have died [v21]; that is total belief in Jesus.

However, although Martha adds an even more powerful statement ‘I know that God will give you whatever you ask’ [v22], there are some visible gaps in her knowledge of Jesus, as she sees her brother’s resurrection solely as a ‘last day’ event [v23-24].

When we compare our faith to Martha’s, how do we come out in comparison?

It is so easy to judge someone by the little we see of them, or hear about them. Perhaps we need to remember ‘never judge a book by its cover’.

Something to do

Write down a church lifestyle that reflects both the Martha and Mary characteristics.

Describe the ways in which Jesus reflected both the Martha and Mary characteristics.

Using a concordance, look up the scriptures to support your thinking.

Something to pray

Let us seek forgiveness from God for the judgements that we have made about people who we knew so little about.

Think of the Marthas in your life and give thanks to God for them.

Think of the Marys in your life and give thanks to God for them.
