Prayers for the refugee crisis

Points for prayer:

Pray for those who have and are fleeing their homes into an uncertain future.

Pray for Christian Aid partners working in Syria, Iraq and Lebanon.

Pray for Christian Aid’s ACT Alliance partners working in Greece, Hungary and Serbia.

Pray for those in authority to make wise, cooperative and compassionate decisions.

Pray for change and a peaceful resolution to the conflict in Syria.

'Lord, when was it that we saw you hungry and gave you food, or thirsty and gave you something to drink? And when was it that we saw you a stranger and welcomed you, or naked and gave you clothing? And when was it that we saw you sick or in prison and visited you?' And the king will answer them, 'Truly I tell you, just as you did it to one of the least of these who are members of my family, you did it to me.' (Matthew 25, 37-41

God of all, where are your children?

Let us see God’s children, who are far from home,

adrift in an open, overcrowded boat,

with no compass, no crew, no safety.

God of all, why is there crying?

Let us hear the cries of refugees and respond with love

to those whose escape from danger

leads only to a journey into danger.

God of all, who is praying?

Let us pray for the young lives being lost,

for the families who are broken apart,

asking for comfort and for justice.

God of all, who is answering?

Let us see that You are in the boat,

alongside the members of your family.

May we, who bear your name,

answer with compassion for you.

Merciful God,

We pray for all whose desperation leads them to the sea,

to undertake perilous voyages,

often following dangerous journeys over land:

those escaping brutal wars,

those fleeing religious persecution,

those escaping climate disasters and economic ruin,

those looking for hope in a hopeless situation.

May we look beyond our own fears and concerns

to the needs of those who have nothing,

risk everything

and depend on the kindness of strangers.

May our hearts be opened,

our leaders be challenged

and our self-interest be called out,

in Jesus’ name.

‘Deal with each other justly, do not oppress the refugee, the fatherless or the widow, and do not shed innocent blood. Journey in all the ways I command you, that all may go well with you.’ (Jeremiah 7, 6-7)

Lord of the journey,

We ask for your protection on all who have fled their homes.

Give them strength on their journeys and grant that they may

find places of compassion at which to rest.

Ease their fear as they throw in their lot with strangers

And keep alive their vision of finding a secure and welcoming home.

A prayer for the people of Syria

Almighty and all powerful God, creator of the world and the nations

We bring before you all those caught up in the conflict in Syria.

We pray for an immediate ceasefire, for an end to violence against all civilians.

Give humanitarian organisations the space to assess the needs of those living in poverty and insecurity.

We pray for those who are experiencing the pain of personal loss, for families who are mourning the loss of loved ones

Comfort especially those who have friends and family members missing.

We pray for those caught up in the cycle of violence and bloodshed: give them a just peace.

We pray for those forced to flee their homes: keep them safe on their travels and arrival in foreign lands.

We pray for Christian Aid partners in neighbouring countries: guide them in their response to this situation.

We pray for those in positions of power who have the means to make a difference:

Guide the United Nations, and governments whose intervention might bring about peace.

We pray for the future of all countries where people have been willing to challenge unfair and unjust governments

We ask that the outcome will be a better future for all, and that the poor and marginalised will experience new lives of dignity and hope.

And we pray for ourselves, that we will not ignore their pleas for help

That we may play our part in bringing about the change that they want to see.

A prayer for the Financing for Development conference

Loving God,

We pray for global leaders, civil society representatives and others gathering in Ethiopia for a global 'Financing for Development' conference. We pray that delegates will be united in desire for a fairer world, where all people can share in the goodness of creation. May they place at the heart of discussions the vulnerable, the marginalised and those living in poverty.

In Jesus' name,

A prayer for Gaza

In times of revolution

Dear God of all,

nations and peoples come and go amidst the eternity of your good purposes,

governments and dictators,

presidents and prime ministers,

military juntas and civilian administrations,

all are weighed in the balance of your history,

tested by your demands of covenant justice,

and found wanting.

For we struggle to govern and build with a big enough span of hospitality.

We who know so much about self-interest find is so much harder to foster safe welcome for everyone.

We who long for life and liberty find the construction of hope so elusive.

At our best we have managed greatness,

at our worst we have managed the almost unimaginable.

So now the tide turns in parts of the world grown larger in the media atlas:

More countries join the unfolding list of nations whose history shudders across a new threshold.

Watching, we pray for all who live in uncertain times.

We remember that the journeys towards hope are fraught with difficulty and risk.

We pray for people taking to their familiar streets in the less familiar guise of revolutionary.

We pray for families striving to keep track of one another amidst chaos and terrible rumour.

We pray for those within whom passion burns and those who tremble in fear of what a new day might bring.

We pray for those who find their businesses burning and their bodies broken.

We pray for the dying and those who mourn a loved one.

We pray for police and army who have taken sides and now find themselves tested by the spirit of their neighbours.

We pray for leaders watching from behind the gilded cages they have built for themselves.

We pray for those who have great power behind the scenes,

that they might be touched by the deep longings of their people for a better life and let change be.

We pray for those who have done well under an old regime and who now contemplate awful things to ensure their survival.

We pray for the United Nations in its faltering watch over our world;

may its corridors and meeting rooms be the places for urgent conversation that averts violence and brutality.

We pray for the governments of watching nations who have collaborated with the past and now call for the future.

We pray for our government, that we might be part of a better dawn for people of a distant land.

We pray for ourselves, that we might be more than watchers of news.

God of the nations and all their peoples,

hear our prayer,

in the name of he who knew and loved a nation,

but embraced all creation with redeeming love.

This reflection and prayer has been written by the Rev Neil Thorogood, Director of Pastoral Studies at Westminster College, Cambridge.

Neil teaches pastoral theology on all the academic programmes and also has particular interests in the visual arts and theology. He is also a contributor to Christian Aid's daily readings.

Prayer about the global financial crisis

God of all the world, give us wisdom in troubled times.

As we realise how fragile our systems of security are,

remind us how much more fragile they are for those who have nothing.

As we talk of financial crisis,

remind us of the true financial crisis for those who go to bed hungry.

As we face challenges over our own resources,

remind us that you teach us to share what we have.

Inspire us to live in a Christ-like way,

and to bring your peace to a world in turmoil.
