Matopeni slum diary: June 2010

Follow us over the course of a year as we help the community of Matopeni in Nairobi, Kenya, build clean water and sanitation facilities.

For Catherine, Veronica and 300 families living in Nairobi’s Matopeni settlement, life is about to change.

The story so far...

After years spent in grinding poverty, with little hope that even the most basic services such as clean water and sanitation would reach the settlement, Catherine Kithuku, her sister Everlyne and friend Veronica Milla decided to take action.

They formed Arise and Shine to help the slum’s many single mothers help themselves and to campaign to bring clean water and sanitation to Matopeni.

Find out more about Cathy, Veronica and Everlyne’s hopes for the project:

Christian Aid Week

Their story was told during Christian Aid Week 2010, inspiring thousands of people to support vital work with some of the poorest communities around the world – communities like Matopeni that have lived through years of neglect.

Your continued generosity is allowing us to work with Matopeni over the coming year.

We will follow the community’s journey as local partner organisation Maji na Ufanisi works with them to install clean water points and working drains, supporting them to manage these new facilities and a toilet block funded by the local government.

Join them on their journey

We will hear from the community as the project unfolds, how they feel when work runs smoothly and what they think when it doesn’t.

Join us as through the eyes of Matopeni community we explore the challenges faced by Christian Aid and our partners, and the impact our work can have.

You can find out how the project is progressing and what is changing for the community by coming back to this page as it will be updated throughout the year.
