Matopeni slum diary: November 2010

Follow us over the course of a year as we help the community of Matopeni in Nairobi, Kenya, build clean water and sanitation facilities.

KenyaThis month Matopeni finished work on the drains, bringing them a step closer to completing their own sanitation project.

This month, as World Toilet Day was celebrated around the world, Maji na Ufanisi and Matopeni’s community finished work on drains which will be connected to a sanitation block the local government is constructing.

Drains now functioning

It has taken the community just four months to construct five feeder channels and a 650 metre main drain to carry sewage away from the settlement.

As Christmas approaches, families will for the first time look forward to it without worrying that their children will become ill because of poor sanitation.

Community meets local government

KenyaAnne Muthoni, community organiser with Maji na Ufanisi, has been helping Matopeni negotiate with the local government about work on a toilet block

After Bishop Margaret Wanjiru was re-elected as MP for the Starehe constituency, Maji na Ufanisi arranged a meeting between her staff and members of the community to talk about how they will work together to ensure Matopeni has good access to clean water and sanitation in the future.

The community highlighted their concerns over a local government project to build a toilet block in

Matopeni which has been stalled for several months.  Local government representatives agreed work on this project would restart following the meeting.

Find out more from John Ochola, Christian Aid’s governance programme officer about how the community has used the by-election to demand support from their MP.
