Keeping Malawi mothers and babies safe

March 2014

This Mothering Sunday, while we celebrate our mums and the wonderful women in our lives, women in Malawi are in unnecessary danger as they become mothers. One in 36 women dies during childbirth.

We believe that every mother should be able to give birth safely with the medical care she needs.

Reaching pregnant women

Two of our partners are working in northern Malawi to help cut maternal and infant mortality rates.

They are training health workers to identify problems early, and giving them bicycles so they can visit pregnant women in their own homes.

Working with fathers, they are ensuring that women have the support they need to keep themselves and their babies healthy.

Partnership with Scotland

This work is funded by 10 churches and church groups from Scotland. The money they raise will be match-funded by the Scottish Government at a ratio of 7:1, resulting in more than £400,000 going directly towards saving mothers' lives and improving care for new mums and babies.
