This year, we marked the 60th anniversary of Christian Aid Week. To celebrate, we paid tribute to the incredible dedication of our supporters.

Every May, thousands of supporters take to the streets – for door-to-door collections, cake sales, sponsored walks, abseils, among many other events – to raise money to support people around the world living in poverty.

This Christian Aid Week, we took the opportunity to celebrate some of the amazing supporters who make it all happen, by presenting Diamond Awards across the UK.

Our South East Diamonds

Right across our region, there were shining examples.

The local Christian Aid Group in Meopham marked the 50th anniversary of a sponsored walk. Diamond Awards were presented to Peter Simons who organised the very first walk, Paul Thomas who arranges matched giving from his employer Microsoft, and Eric White who at the age of 92 continues to be involved in marking out the course of the walk.

Members of the Chinnor Christian Aid Group were awarded in recognition of their tireless commitment to fundraising activities, like a recent Fashionistas for a Fairer World event, a jazz night, Carols on the Train as well as more usual activities like coffee mornings and house-to-house collections.

At an event in Brighton to celebrate local diamonds, the Bishop of Chichester, Martin Warner thanked volunteers.
Martin said: ‘You are not just Christian Aid Week diamonds shining God’s light and love in our world, but diamonds both to God and us as a church. We value you so very much.’

Those receiving awards included Margaret Luetchford who has volunteered in Crawley for 53 years and Julian Martin who has organised house-to-house collections in Horsham for 20 years.

A very big thank you

These are just a few examples of the many people who give so much time and effort to support Christian Aid.  Between them, they have raised millions of pounds over many decades which has made such a difference to the work we do in 40 countries.  Thank you to all our diamonds!
