Christian Aid condemns senseless loss of life in Gaza

Christian Aid today condemned the loss of life in Gaza, and called for the establishment of an immediate independent investigation into what appears to be grave breaches of international law.

“We deplore the senseless killings on the Gazan border today, and call for the immediate establishment of an independent investigation into today’s events, ” said Sorley McCaughey, Head of Advocacy and Policy at Christian Aid Ireland

Over the last three weeks hundreds of Palestinians peacefully protesting at the Gazan border have been injured or killed by Israeli soldiers allegedly firing live rounds of ammunition.

“What is particularly shocking appears to be the apparent targeting of civilians by soldiers using live ammunition rounds. An independent investigation into these actions need to be launched immediately and those found guilty to be brought to justice, ” said Mr. Mc Caughey

Israeli human rights organisation, and Christian Aid partner BtSelem, condemned the disregard for human life:

“The demonstrations held in Gaza today came as no surprise. Israel had plenty of time to come up with alternate approaches for dealing with the protests, apart from firing live ammunition”.

“The fact that live gunfire is once again the sole measure that the Israeli military is using in the field evinces appalling indifference towards human life on the part of senior Israeli government and military official,”  a statement from the organisation said.
