Tax efficient giving

Pay income tax in the Republic of Ireland? Christian Aid could claim tax relief on your donation and boost the value of your gift without it costing you a cent.

If you pay income tax in the Republic of Ireland, and donate more than €250 in a tax year, Christian Aid could claim tax relief on your donation and boost the value of your gift without it costing you a cent.

If you are a tax payer the tax refund for donations will be set at a blended rate of 31% regardless of the rate of tax which you pay. The Revenue Donations Tax scheme refunds 31% blended rate of tax on the equivalent of your ‘pre-taxed’ donation value, which effectively results in a 45% return on donations.

Using an example of a donation of €1,000, the Donations scheme works as follows:

€1,000 donation, represents the 69% of remaining income, which an individual keeps after taxes have been deducted. Assuming a blended rate of tax at 31%.

Revenue bulk up the donation back to it’s original ‘pre-tax’ value & then calculate the 31% donations tax claim that can be made.

€1,000/69% = €1,449.28

€1,449.28 x 31% = €449.28

Thus we get €449.28 back from Revenue, which is effectively 45% of the net donated amount of €1,000.

These extra funds, at no cost to you, but can make a very significant difference to the funds we raise. For example donations of €250 over the period of a year is worth an extra €112.32 to Christian Aid.
