Something to read

And now, my children, listen to me:     happy are those who keep my ways.  Hear instruction and be wise,     and do not neglect it. Happy is the one who listens to me,     watching daily at my gates,     waiting beside my doors. For whoever finds me finds life     and obtains favour from the Lord;  but those who miss me injure themselves; all who hate me love death.

- Proverbs 8:32-36.

Something to think about

It is the voice of Wisdom that we hear calling out to us in this passage. Earlier in Proverbs we learn that Wisdom’s ways are the ways of righteousness and the paths of justice, and that Wisdom delights in God’s creation. She invites us to listen and to keep her ways. When we find Wisdom, we find life.

Looking back over this year, your support has enabled Christian Aid to respond quickly to emergencies and disasters like the Ebola outbreak in the DRC, Cyclone Idai in Eastern Africa and the Tsunami in Indonesia. Our approach is always to listen to affected communities to decide what is needed and how best it can be delivered.

What is the most useful thing for someone whose house has been demolished in an earthquake or flood? Tents, building materials, blankets, food, cooking equipment? Sometime cash is the most useful thing we can provide. It enables a family to buy what they need from the local market, and it restores their dignity. Listening to the wisdom of people affected by disasters helps us to continually improve our response. Listening leads to wisdom, which leads to life in all its fullness.

Who could you listen to today? Who might be sharing wisdom with you?

Something to do

We asked communities in Nepal what they thought of the aid they received from agencies following the devastating earthquakes in 2015. Watch this video to hear the wise words they shared.

Something to pray

Help us to listen to each other
To quiet whispers of wisdom
To shouts of anger
To outbursts of joy
To cries of pain
To sighs of lament
and to seek out the voices that are unheard or silenced.
Help us listen to You, O God
to follow Your ways and find life.
