Something to think about
The transmission of spiritual truth and authenticity of faith from one generation to another is crucial. We must not take anything for granted just because it is familiar knowledge to us. In verse 3 the Psalmist refers to stories that 'we have heard and known.’
Every generation needs to have the opportunity to access a rich repository of inherited spiritual truth and life skills. The Psalmist realised that he was the possessor of key life lessons and principles because the previous generation had not failed his generation in communicating essential truth.
Ronald Reagan famously stated, 'Freedom is never more than one generation away from extinction. We didn’t pass it on to our children in the bloodstream. It must be fought for, protected and handed on for them to do the same…' The root of freedom is authentic truth.
The Psalmist made a choice that he would not hide the truth from his next generation. He would proclaim the glorious deeds of the Lord, his power and miraculous deeds to those emerging to be the future leaders. We are not accountable for what the previous generation did or didn’t do but we are regarding what we leave as a legacy of vibrant and sincere spirituality for the next generation.
Something to do
We may not be professional educators but even as ordinary believers we are all commissioned to impart our faith through being a genuine role model for others to follow. The best truth is that which can be imitated and applied through discipleship. Discipleship is a universal and, for all time, transferable model of transmitting truth.
Something to pray
Freeing God, help us to make the choice today to be an investor in the next generation.
Forgive us when we selfishly store up lots of truth and wisdom gained from experience and not lovingly impart it to those who will succeed us.
May our generation not be the one that fails in the ongoing transmission process of life-giving truth.
