One of the most pervasive inequalities in the world is that between women and men. Gender justice is, therefore, at the heart of Christian Aid Ireland’s work.

It is estimated that over one-third of women have experienced physical and/or sexual violence at some point in their lives.

Women disproportionately bear the burden of poverty. They have fewer ways to cope during crises and as they are often the main carers for children and family they often place their needs last. They can have more limited options for work, forcing them into to exploitative labour and their access to education can be curtailed.

Christian Aid Ireland’s work on gender equality seeks to ensure that woman and girls can access essential human rights such as education, health, work and shelter, that their voices are heard and respected in their communities and that they are protected from violence. It’s about achieving equality and fairness between women and men.

As part of our Global Citizenship Education work which is funded by Irish Aid, the Government of Ireland’s development cooperation programme we have produced a workship guide on the theme of Gender Justice.

This workshop is aimed at church-linked groups who want to explore the link between gender inequality, poverty and injustice. The guide contains case studies, group activities and Bible studies to help groups discover and learn for themselves how gender inequality can exacerbate poverty and what we can all do to challenge it.
