Rich

We need to hold the rich to account.

Something to read

As for those who in the present age are rich, command them not to be haughty, or to set their hopes on the uncertainty of riches, but rather on God who richly provides us with everything for our enjoyment. They are to do good, to be rich in good works, generous, and ready to share, thus storing up for themselves the treasure of a good foundation for the future, so that they may take hold of the life that really is life.

- 1 Timothy 6: 17 – 19.

Something to think about

The Bible never gives the rich an easy ride. Far from it, we need to hold the rich to account. Not only do we as individuals always want more but large successful companies seem to want more and more. Nowadays it seems the standard game is to avoid paying taxes by moving money 'legitimately' around the world.

Not only does this affect the UK but it has huge ramifications for poorer countries. Multinationals are adept at moving money around, thus avoiding paying taxes in the countries in which they are earning money. For every £10 given in aid there is £15 disappearing through tax loopholes. This is madness.

Tax havens need to be open to scrutiny. There needs to be accountability at all levels around the world. We must keep up the pressure on political leaders to put an end to tax dodging.

Something to pray

Oh God of wisdom and justice,

help us to shine your light

upon the behaviour of those much larger than us.

Help us fight for fair dealings in an unfair world.
